NicOx, a French company, is testing a drug that breaks down in the body into naproxen and a chemical that releases nitric oxide. Nitric oxide plays many roles in the body, including dilating blood vessels and spurring mucus formation in the gastrointestinal tract. Some early trials suggest, though not definitively, that the drug may have lower gastrointestinal and cardiovascular risks than other NSAIDs.
